English Lesson - Beginners - 3 of 7

Let's look at the time. Telling the time.

We have two ways to ask for the time.

We can say, what time is it?

Have you got the time?

Can you remember those questions?

What time is it? And have you got the time?

Let's look at answering these questions.

On the lock, we have 12 numbers.

We also have two hands, a big hand and a small hand.

So we have a big hand and a small hand.

If the two hands are together, we can say its 12 noon or 12 midnight.

Noon is pm, in the afternoon.

And midnight is am, at night.

We split the lock into 4 parts, 4 quarters.

When the two hands are at the top of the clock, we always say o'clock.

We can say 12 noon, 12 midnight or 12 twelve o'clock.

If the big hand moves, we would say its five minutes past 6.

This side of the clock, we say past. Five past 6.

Do you know what this one will be?

How many minutes from 12 to 2?

What about three, that's 15 minutes, this is a little different, this was our first quarter.

So at three, we say it's a quarter past 3.

It's a quarter past 6.

We have a quarter past, half past.

And what about this side, this side is a little different.

This side is past, but this side we use to.

We go back, 25 past 6, and here we say, 25 to 7.

Let's recap.

The 2 hands at the top together, it's o'clock.

When the big hand moves we count the minutes, 1 to 3 4 5 minutes past 6 or 5 past 6.

10 past 6, can you remember this one.

What time it is when you're watching?

Have you got the time?

I'm going to put some times at the bottom of the screen and I want you to tell me what time it is.
